When do I refer?

"When do I refer my child to Speech Pathology? Other people seem to have trouble understanding him, but I understand everything he says"

Children's speech and language abilities develop over time and at different rates.

Generally...

By two years of age, toddlers should be able to:

  • Follow simple instructions eg "where are your shoes?"
  • Name simple body parts
  • Listen to a simple story
  • Speak in short sentences eg "me drink" "daddy car"

By three years of age, children should be:

  • Readily understood by other adults
  • Forming longer sentences
  • Understanding longer instructions and stories
